Jackson State’s upset bid falls just short at Memphis
MEMPHIS, Tenn – Jackson State’s furious second-half rally fell just a basket shy, as the Lady Tigers dropped a 68-67 nail-biter to Memphis Tuesday evening to begin the Tomeika Reed era.
Down 49-46 entering the fourth, Jackson State went on a 14-7 run to take a 60-56 lead at the midpoint of the quarter. After Memphis’ Taylor Barnes sank a pair of free throws to bring Memphis within a possession (62-60), JSU’s Christina Ellis fouled out with 1:45 left, sending Barnes back to the stripe. She proceeded to sink the front end of a pair of tries, and Jamirah Shutes scored the next five points for Memphis to put JSU in a 66-62 hole.
Jackson State’s D’Asia Mitchell buried a trey to bring the Lady Tigers within one, but Barnes converted both ends of another trip to the line, and despite a lay-up by Chelsea Causey as time expired, Jackson State was unable to make up the slim deficit.
Eliis was a rebound shy of a double-double with 16 points, nine boards, five assists and three steals. Marneisha Hamer added 14 points, four rebounds, three assists, three steals and a block. Antoinette Womack chipped in with 10 points and eight rebounds, and Kaisha Lucky dished out eight assists.
Shutes led all players with 20 points, and Barnes added 16.
