Southern dominates Millsaps in season opener
BATON ROUGE, La. – With 11 different players scoring and three notching double-figures, Southern dominated Millsaps College 71-36 to open the season Tuesday evening at F.G. Clark Activity Center. The victory is the first for Carlos Funchess as head coach of the Jaguars.
Brittany Rose and Amani McWain scored 14 points each to lead the way for the Jaguars. Sarai Blissett was a terror for Southern (1-0), scoring 11 points, grabbing seven boards, swatting four shots and making a pair of steals.
After a sluggish start where Millsaps led 10-8 midway through the first, Southern seized control with a 15-0 run to close the stanza. The Jaguars would pour it on from there, leading by as many as 37 at one point during the contest.
Southern held Millsaps to a 29.5 percent shooting clip (13-44) and outrebounded the visitors 46-32. The Jaguars also forced 30 turnovers, scoring 29 points off of them. Additionally, the Jaguars got 45 points from their bench.
QUICK HITS:
- Grambling State’s Shakyla Hill picked up right where she left off last season, scoring 18 points along with six boards, five assists and three steals during a 97-48 loss at Auburn.
- The Lady Tigers (0-1) led briefly against Auburn, but a five-minute scoring drought allowed Auburn to gain an upper hand that was never relinquished. GSU closed the margin to 24-15 after back-to-back 3-pointers by Hannah Henderson and Ariel Williams, with 12 seconds remaining in the first quarter, but a forgettable second quarter put the game away.
- Alcorn State’s Toddriana Isler posted a double-double with 18 points, 12 boards and four steals, but it was not enough as the Lady Braves fell 70-58 to Lane College.
- Isler was one of three players in double figures for Alcorn (0-1), as Jada Hargrove scored 11 points with six rebounds, five assists and three steals, and Charisma Walker scored 10 points with eight rebounds.
- After a sluggish first quarter, Alcorn battled back in the middle periods to bring the game within one possession, but a five-minute stretch without a field goal allowed Lane to build an ultimately insurmountable lead.
