Mitchell scores 15 as TSU smothers Savannah State
SAVANNAH, Ga. – Niya Mitchell scored 15 points as a stingy Texas Southern defense limited Savannah State to a 24.1 percent shooting clip (14-of-58) during a 65-41 victory Friday evening.
Isis Lane was a point shy of a double-double for Texas Southern, grabbing 10 rebounds, scoring nine points and swatting three shots. Bre’nae Andrews also added nine points.
Tied 27-27 at intermission, TSU pulled away with a dominating third quarter. Texas Southern outscored Savannah State 19-4 in the frame and cruised from there, leading by as many as 26 in the final stanza.
Texas Southern outrebounded SSU 51-33 and shot 43.9 percent (25-of-57) from the floor. Robbi Allen led Savannah State with 12 points.
Slow start hampers Alcorn at UAB
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Three Alcorn State Lady Braves scored in double-figures, but the team couldn't overcome a slow first quarter and fell to UAB 80-53 at Bartow Arena.
The Blazers (6-1) raced out to an 11-0 lead and led 24-2 at the 3:48 mark. Alcorn (0-6) outscored UAB 20-9 in the second quarter but couldn't mount a large enough comeback in the second half.
De'Asia Brown led Alcorn in scoring with 14 points. Jada Hargrove registered 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting, while Charisma Walker notched 14 points and eight rebounds. Diamond Hall pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds. She helped Alcorn outrebound UAB 39-35 including a 12-5 mark in offensive boards.
The Blazers were guided by Rachael Childress who scored 17 points on 5-of-8 from the three-point line. Trista Magee scored 15 points off the bench.
Alcorn made a push midway through the second quarter. Trailing 36-13, Toddriana Isler and Brown keyed an 8-0 run after to get within 15. Alcorn cut into the lead further and managed to get within eight of the Blazers with 8:36 left in the third.
UAB responded with a 10-0 run to push its lead back up to 51-33 with 6:18 remaining and shot 50 percent from the field in the fourth quarter to stay ahead.

Prairie View falters later versus Texas-Rio Grande Valley
EDINBURG, Texas –Prairie View A&M was defeated 57-50 by the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on Friday night in Edinburg, Texas during the Battle on the Border Tournament.
The Lady Panthers trailed by as many as six points in the opening minutes of first quarter. Jordyn Penniman gave the team their first lead of the game at 9-8 after a made three-pointer at the 4:05 mark. PVAMU ended the first quarter leading 14-9 after a quick layup by Shala Dobbins with two seconds left in the period.
Prairie View managed an 11-0 run until the 5:32 mark of the second quarter. The team led by as many as 18 points and went into the half with a 34-16 lead over UTRGV. Penniman led the team with 12 points on 4 of 5 three-point shooting.
The team led throughout the third quarter, but had their lead cut down to two after a made three-pointer by UTRGV in the closing seconds of the period with PVAMU leading 42-40.
Both teams tied twice in the fourth quarter, but the Panthers were unable to hold on late in the period before falling 57-50.
Erin Willis contributed 13 points, three steals, two assists and one rebound. Dobbins also scored 13 points and had two rebounds. Penniman chipped in with 12 points, one assist and one rebound.
