JACKSON, Miss. – Despite a double-double by Marneisha Hamer, Jackson State (1-5) fell short versus Southeastern Louisiana, dropping a 50-45 contest to the Lady Lions Tuesday evening at Lee E. Williams Athletic Assembly Center.
Hamer shot 6-of-7 from the floor on her way to a 17-point, 10-rebound effort. Antoinette Womack added 11 points for the Lady Tigers as well. However, leading scorer Christina Ellis was held in check to the tune of six points on 2-of-10 shooting.
Jackson State sputtered out of the gate initially, falling behind 8-1 to the Lady Lions. An Ellis lay-up capped a 12-4 run that put JSU ahead by one, but Southeastern Louisiana closed the first quarter on a 6-0 run.
From that point, Jackson State was forced into catch-up mode. Despite falling behind by double-digits twice in the second and third quarters, the Lady Tigers would not go quietly, as a 10-0 run in the third allowed them to tie the game at 32 with 2:55 left in the period. However, the Lady Lions closed the quarter similarly to the first, as an 8-4 advantage on the scoreboard allowed them to carry a 40-36 lead into the fourth.
Though the Lady Tigers thrice tied the game during the final stanza, they were unable to overtake the Lady Lions down the stretch, as Jackson State was outscored 7-2 over the final 3:39 after tying the game at 43.
JSU outrebounded its opposition 36-30, and shot 36.8 percent (14-of-38) from the field. SELA shot 38 percent (19-of-50) from the floor. Celica Sterling led the Lady Lions with 15 points, and Caitlyn Williams added 11 points.
