Boyd’s 17 not enough for Grambling versus Crimson Tide
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -
Jazmin Boyd scored 14 of her team-high 17 points in the first half, but it wasn’t enough to propel the Grambling State University women’s basketball team in a 73-55 loss to Alabama on Friday afternoon at Coleman Coliseum.

Boyd finished the day with 17 points, on 4-of-9 shooting and was 7-of-8 at the foul line. She added four rebounds, two assists, two steals and one blocked shot. Shakyla Hill chipped in with 15 points, seven boards, four steals and three assists.

Jasmine Walker paced the Crimson Tide with 24 points, on 10-of-15 shooting, nine boards and three assists. Ariyah Copeland registered a double-double of 18 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, while Cierra Johnson tallied 11 points, five rebounds, two assists, two blocks and one steal.

Grambling State (1-4) led 19-14 at end of one period and trailed 33-31 at the half. However, Alabama put the game away by outscoring the Lady Tigers in the third quarter, 20-10.

Grambling State cut the deficit to 35-34 after a layup by Shakyla Hill with 8:08 left in the third, but Alabama used a 14-3 run over the next five minutes, capped by a Jasmine Walker jumper, to extend the advantage to 49-37 with just over three minutes remaining in the period.

The Lady Tigers trimmed the margin to nine moments later but could not get any closer.

MVSU’s upset bid falls short at Southern Miss
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -
Despite 15 points and six rebounds from Makayla Bonner and 13 points from Kristy Parker, Mississippi Valley State’s upset bid at Southern Miss fell just short as the Devilettes dropped a 67-60 tilt to the Lady Eagles Friday evening.

MVSU leading scorer LaKendra Bassett was held to six points. She came in averaging over 13 points per game.

Down five entering the fourth, a Parker lay-up cut the deficit to three with just over six minutes to play. However, the Devilettes went scoreless for the next three minutes, during which time Southern Miss pushed its lead to nine. MVSU – who shot 40.4 (23-of-57) percent from the field compared to Southern Miss’ 37.9 percent (22-of-58) clip – got no closer than four the rest of the way.

Southern Miss outrebounded Valley 47-29 and enjoyed a decided advantage at the foul line. The Lady Eagles knocked own 21 of their 25 tries from the stripe, but Mississippi Valley struggled, making just nine of its 19 free throw attempts.

Megan Brown’s 19 points and 13 rebounds led the way for Southern Miss.
