Tonight's Score:
Middle Tennessee 101, Mississippi Valley State 51
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Three Mississippi Valley State (1-3) players scored in double-figures, but a slow start coupled with hot shooting from Middle Tennessee was too much for the Devilettes to overcome in a 101-51 loss to the Blue Raiders Wednesday evening.
LaKendra Bassett led MVSU with 12 points, five boards and three assists. Kristy Parker and Angelica Darcus each scored 10 points.
After matching the Blue Raiders point-for-point early on and leading briefly early on, the Devilettes lost their handle on the contest as Jordan Majors, A'Queen Hayes and Alex Johnson helped key a 18-4 run in favor of Middle Tennessee that put MVSU in a double-digit deficit. The Devilettes were unable to reverse their predicament as Middle Tennessee found its stroke from beyond the arc in the second quarter, knocking down 5-of-10 from deep during a frame where Mississippi Valley was outscored 32-9.
The deficit proved too much to overcome.
Mississippi Valley shot 44.2 percent from the field (19-of-43), but Middle Tennessee connected on 59.4 percent (41-of-69) of its shots, including a 12-of-28 showing from three-point land (42.9 percent). The Devilettes also struggled from the foul line, shooting just 7-of-26 from the stripe. Middle Tennessee outrebounded MVSU 46-20.
Johnson led all players with 18 points in 19 minutes of play. Anna Jones added 17 points, five rebounds and four assists while shooting 5-of-7 from three.
