North Alabama (4-0) and Alabama State (0-4) traded baskets to start the game as an Ayana Emmanuel three-pointer tied the game. Devilettes take down Austin Peay State thanks to blistering shooting display
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Mississippi Valley State got 23 points from LaKendra Bassett and 21 points from Kristy Parker as a scintillating shooting display allowed the Devilettes to outlast Austin Peay State 95-89 Monday evening at the Winfield Dunn Center.
Bassett added six steals, six assists and five rebounds. Five MVSU players reached double-figures in all. Angelic Darcus and Makayla Bonner each scored 12 for the Devilettes, and Desiray Mosely added 10 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Defensive pressure keyed Valley early on, as the Devilettes opened the game on a 10-2 run. The Governors wouldn’t go quietly in what was a high-scoring first quarter, and the contest remained close through the second period thanks in part to a four-minute scoring drought for the Devilettes. Mississippi Valley broke through that thanks to the long ball, and ultimately carried a six-point lead into the break.
After pushing its lead to 12 heading into the fourth, Valley seemed poised to run away with matters as Darcus keyed an 8-0 run to open the final frame, resulting in a 20-point lead for the Devilettes. Here, the Governors jumped on the comeback trail, scrapping together an 11-1 run to get within 10. After Keisha Gregory buried a three to cut the MVSU lead to seven, Bonner converted a three-point play to extend the lead back to double digits. Nieja Crawford and Gregory, who went four-of-six from downtown, both hit threes to make it a six-point game. The Govs then stole the ball and Arielle Gonzalez-Varner finished to make it only a four-point game.
From there it came down to free throws, and though APSU got as close as three, MVSU sank nine of its last ten free throws to seal it.
MVSU ended up with 34 total points off turnovers and shot 34-of-49 (69.4 percent) from the field, including an 80 percent clip in the second half. MVSU was outrebounded 51-25, as Austin Peay State dominated the glass offensively.
Gonzales-Varner scored 32 points and corralled a school-record 23 rebounds – 16 offensive – in the game. Gregory added 16 points.
QUICK HITS:
- Briana Thompson scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds for Southern, but it wasn’t enough as the Jaguars fell in a close 53-49 battle to South Alabama. Southern came into the fourth quarter with a three-point lead, but Shaforia Kines scored six points in the final quarter to key a South Alabama comeback.
- Brittany Rose and Jaden Towner scored nine points each for Southern. Savannah Jones led South Alabama with 11 points.
- Jackson State’s Christina Ellis scored 25 points on 8-of-11 shooting, but the Lady Tigers weren’t able to come away victorious at Louisiana-Lafayette as they dropped a 68-61 tilt to the Ragin’ Cajuns. JSU trailed 40-23 at the break, but thanks to Ellis’ 14 points in the second half as well as Marneisha Hamer, Jackson State managed to cut the deficit down to as many as three twice in the last four minutes of regulation. However, ULL staved off the rally with two scores late.
- Hamer had 13 points. Ty’Reona Doucet scored 12 points to lead the Ragin’ Cajuns.
