Furious second-half rally not enough for Alabama State to overcome Samford
MONTGOMERY, Ala. –
Ayana Emmanuel led all scorers with 22 points and ignited a Lady Hornets second half run, but it wasn’t enough as the Alabama State women's basketball team fell short to Samford 60-51 Thursday night.

Emmanuel also chipped in on the glass with seven rebounds, while Jayla Crawford and Tatyana Calhoun each added six points for Alabama State (0-3).

Samford (2-2) opened the game on an 11-2 run and took a 27-10 lead after one quarter before ending the first half with a 34-20 lead.

In the third period, Alabama State would score seven of their 15 points off Samford miscues, cutting the Bulldogs lead to single digits, 44-35, heading into the final quarter. Calhoun hit two free throws with 2:51 remaining in the contest to cut the Bulldog lead to four, but the Lady Hornets would get no closer.

Alabama State ended the night shooting 32.6 (15-of-46) percent from the floor and just 23.1 (3-of-13) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 78.3 (18-of-23) percent from the free throw line and won the rebounding battle, 39-33.

Lady Bulldogs fall in nail-biter to Lipscomb
MONTGOMERY, Ala. –
Carnethia Brown and DeShawna Harper each poured in 12 points for Alabama A&M, but the Lady Bulldogs let one slip to Lipscomb Thursday night, falling in a hotly-contested 62-58 tilt at Elmore Gymnasium.

Harper dished out three assists four AAMU (1-2), and Lazurea Saunders flirted with a double-double, grabbing a team-best nine rebounds and scoring eight points while swiping a pair of steals.

Lipscomb pressed the advantage early as a pair of Emily Kmec threes left the Lady Bulldogs in a 15-7 hole midway through the first. Alabama A&M fought back into it, as Harper buried a trey and scooped home a lay-up to key a 9-3 run that brought the Lady Bulldogs within a bucket heading to the second.

Alabama A&M took over in the second quarter, taking the lead and ultimately pushing it to six going into intermission. However, Lipscomb’s long ball chipped away at the Lady Bulldogs’ lead in the third and though the sides traded baskets down the stretch of the frame, a pair of Keely Morrow free throws left AAMU down 44-42 at the end of three.

Brown buried a three to give Alabama A&M a 46-45 lead 90 seconds into the fourth, but Lipscomb responded with four quick points to regain control. Brown connected again from deep to tie things up at 48 with 6:18 left, but Kmec and Morrow’s efforts were enough to fend off the Lady Bulldogs, who got no closer than two after a Kmec three-ball put Lipscomb ahead for good.

Lipscomb ended the night shooting 42.9 (21-of-49) percent from the floor and 30.4 (7-of-23) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 68.4 (13-of-19) percent from the free throw line. Kmec led with 17 points, and Morrow added 11.

Meanwhile, Alabama A&M shot just 31.9 (22-of-69) percent from the floor and 21.9 (7-of-32) percent from beyond the arc, but won the rebounding battle 49-32.
