Texas Southern 83, Paul Quinn 54

HOUSTON – Behind solid offensive production from Marquia Turner (21 points, seven assists) and Niya Mitchell (18 points) the Texas Southern Lady Tigers Basketball team claimed their first win of the season with a 83-54 rout of Paul Quinn.
 
Texas Southern led 48-24 at the break as the Lady Tigers shot 44.6 percent from the field. Mitchell had an all-around game with nine rebounds, five assists, four steals and a pair of swats as well.
 
Defensively TSU forced Paul Quinn into committing 21 turnovers while also holding them to shooting 37.3 percent from the field. In the paint, the Lady Tigers doubled up Paul Quinn 36-18.
 
Texas Southern's Breasia McElrath tallied 10 points and six rebounds for Texas Southern rounding out the list of Lady Tigers double-digit contributors.

  • Grambling State’s Jazmin Boyd scored her 1,000th career point, leading all Lady Tigers with 10 points during a 68-47 loss to Southern Miss. Shakyla Hill added eight points, seven boards, seven steals and three assists. For Hill, it was the first time since Dec. 28, 2017 that she had been held to single digits in scoring, snapping a streak of 24 consecutive games.
  • Freshman Jayla Crawford was the first player to score in double figures for Alabama State this season, but it was not enough as the Lady Hornets fell to 10th-ranked South Carolina 94-38. Crawford scored 10 points. Fellow freshman Ayana Emmanuel had seven points. Victoria Harvey chipped in six points and a posted team-high five rebounds.
  • Southern suffered its first setback of the season at the hands of Kentucky by a score of 91-41. Skylar O’Bear led all Jaguars players with eight points but shot just 3-of-14 from the field. The Jaguars were held to 30.6 percent shooting in the defeat.
  • LaKendra Bassett and Makayla Bonner were bright spots for Mississippi Valley State during its season-opening loss to TCU (96-47). Bassett scored 13 points and dished out four assists, and Bonner added 12 points. Five TCU players scored in double figures, led by Jordan Moore’s 18.
