Week 7 Volleyball Players of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southwestern Athletic Conference has recognized Alabama A&M’s Terra Brooks and Megan Evans, Southern’s Paige Hall and Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s Haley Gomez as volleyball players of the week for their efforts in matches played from Oct. 2 - 8.
SWAC Offensive Player of the Week – Brooks notched two double-doubles as she led Alabama A&M to two big wins over Alabama State and Jackson State, as the Lady Bulldogs maintained their perfect record in conference play. Against the defending SWAC champion and in-state rival Lady Hornets, the 5’10 junior from Tampa, Fla. put away 18 kills and 14 digs while chipping in three service aces and two block assists as AAMU won in four sets. The league leader in points per set (3.27), kills per set (2.77) and total kills (233), Brooks followed that with a 17-kill, 16-dig effort against Jackson State – another four-set victory for the Lady Bulldogs – adding three assists, another service ace and a block assist.
SWAC Defensive Player of the Week – Hall was a dynamic presence at the net for Southern, leading the Lady Jaguars to a 2-1 week. The 5’11 senior got her hands on 15 total blocks in the three matches, averaging 1.5 blocks per set. Hall put in a season-high eight blocks in the Lady Jaguars’ sweep versus Grambling on Oct. 7. The Arlington, Texas native also factored in offensively with 30 total kills on a strong .338 attack percentage.
SWAC Setter of the Week – Evans continues to stuff the stat sheet for Alabama A&M, as she delivered 91 total assists, averaging 11.38 per set as Alabama A&M went 2-0 on the weekend. The 6’0 sophomore from Houston put up 44 assists against Alabama State, adding seven digs. Versus Jackson State, Evans dished out 47 helpers with five digs and four kills. This marks the third-straight week that Evans, the league leader in assists per set (8.28) and assists per set in league play (11.03), has won setter of the week honors.
SWAC Newcomer of the Week – Gomez hit .255 for the Lady Lions in three matches, posting 29 kills, 24 digs, five service aces and five total blocks. Gomez posted a career effort in Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s win over Prairie View with a 15-kill, 15-dig outing – both totals represent collegiate bests for the freshman from Eastvale, Calif. – against the Lady Panthers.
