Men's OTF Championship: Day Two Recap

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Action continued during day two of the 2017 Southwestern Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field championships, with medalists awarded in the men's decathlon, shot put, long jump and 3000-meter steeplechase.

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS: Prairie View A&M claimed gold and silver in the men's decathlon, as Tristan Ham (5659 points) edged Sunne Rodriguez-Weems (5581 points) to win the conference crown. Finishing third was Alabama State's Chaaka Trahan (5356 points).
Alabama State's Roshaine Byfield beat out the field in the men's shot put, winning the gold with a toss of 16.62 meters. William Gordon of Alcorn State earned silver (15.61m), and taking the bronze was Texas Southern's Chris Allen (14.85m).
In one of the closest meets of the day, Jackson State's Javauny Hyde edged out Alabama State's Chaaka Trahan in the men's long jump. Hyde leapt 7.22m, and Trahan cleared 7.21m to earn the silver. In third place was UAPB's Juwan Parker (7.10m).
Grambling State finished 1-2 in the 3000-meter steeplechase, as Noah Rugut (9:46.30) outlasted teammate Hassan Chepkwony (9:48.77) to win the gold. Chepkwony finished second, and Texas Southern's Xavier Martinez overtook Prairie View's Aaron Austin during the home stretch, earning third place (9:55.84).
