Women's Bowling Championship Recap: Day 2

ARLINGTON, Texas – The top two seeds, #1 seed Alabama State and #2 seed Texas Southern will face off in the championship match of the 2017 Southwestern Athletic Conference Women’s Bowling Championship on Sunday with a 1 p.m. CT start.

The match can be viewed on tape delay on ESPNU, Sunday April 2 at 9:30 p.m. (CT) and also on Monday, April 3 at 8 p.m. (CT).

Texas Southern defeated Jackson State 4-2, and Alabama State 4-1 to advance to the final and went 2-0 in the winner’s bracket.

Alabama State defeated Prairie View 4-3 in its first match of the day.  The Hornets would then face off against the Tigers, falling 4-1 to move to the loser’s bracket.

The Hornets would defeat Southern 4-1 to advance to the championship match.

The Tigers have won the SWAC bowling championship four times, with the last coming in 2006. The Hornets will be seeking the first championship in program history.

Regular season champion and #4 seed Prairie View A&M would win its first match, 4-3 over Southern.  The Panthers would lose its next two matches however, 4-3 to Alabama State, and 4-2 to Southern in the losers bracket, to be eliminated from competition.

#5 seed Southern continued its hot play, by winning three consecutive elimination games.  Following the Jaguars loss to Prairie View, it would then face #3 seed Jackson State, defeating the Tigers 4-3.   

#6 Grambling State would go 0-2 on the day, falling 4-3 to Jackson State and then 4-0 to Southern.

The all-tournament team and coach of the year awards were also announced after games one and two.  Haley Young (Alabama State), Denisyha Waller (Texas Southern), Violet Kirk (Jackson State), Kimari Jackson (Texas Southern) and Laurencia Harmon (Grambling State) all received all-tournament team honors.

Prairie View head coach Glenn White was the recipient of the coach of the year award.
