PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Shelby Unruh scored the match-winning goal in penalty kicks to give Alabama State its second consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference soccer championship over Grambling State on Sunday.
In a match that was tightly contested throughout, the first half ended in a 0-0 draw. Alabama State outshot the Lady Tigers 6-3 in the opening frame.
The second half saw the defensive struggle continue. The Lady Hornets outshot the Lady Tigers, 7-4 in the second half and 13-7 in regulation.
The match remained scoreless at the end of regulation and went into overtime. In the extra periods, nether team found the back of the net with the score remaining 0-0 and went into penalty kicks to determine the winner. The Lady Tigers out chanced Grambling State 2-0 in the extra frames.
In penalty kicks, Alabama State outscored Grambling State 4-2 with Unruh’s shot giving the Lady Hornets the championship.
Goalkeeper Gianna Guyot was named the tournament MVP for the Lady Hornets.
