Grambling State Defeats Howard 3-1, to Secure Trip to Title Game

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – No. 2 two seed Grambling State advanced to the championship game of the 2017 SWAC women’s soccer tournament, with a 3-1 win over Howard in the second semifinal match on Friday.
This is GSU’s first trip to the SWAC soccer championship game since 2006, and fourth in program history. Grambling State is looking to capture its third conference title in program history.
The Lady Tigers opened the scoring in the 21st minute when Florence David scored on a shot that found the back of the net, to give the Lady Tigers a 1-0 lead.
Grambling State extended its lead late in the opening frame, when Brittany Terry scored on a penalty kick, to extend GSU’s lead to 2-0 heading into the break.
The Lady Tigers extended its lead in the second half, when Jasmine Smith scored with an assist from Kaylee Holt, to give Grambling State a 3-0 advantage.
Howard cut into GSU’s lead by one in the 81st minute. Hollie Cartwright scored with an assist by Aleeya Sawyer to make the score 3-1 with nine minutes left.
The Lady Tigers were able to hang on to secure its trip to the championship match. GSU held Howard to just three shots on goal, needed only five shots to score its goals on just five shots in the victory.
