PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Alabama State advanced to the championship match of the SWAC soccer tournament in dramatic fashion, as the Lady Hornets prevailed via a 6-5 score in penalty kicks win over Texas Southern in the semifinal match.
Teaggan Ilela opened scoring just 1:05 into the contest. Ilela scored on a shot that found the low right corner of the net, to give the Lady Hornets the 1-0 advantage.
Texas Southern tied the match just six minutes into the second half as Kelly Sanders scored to even the score at 1-1. Neither side was able to break through for the duration of the tightly-contested match, as the score remained 1-1 at the end of regulation.
The two overtime periods was not enough time to determine a winner, and the match went into penalty kicks.
In penalty kicks, Texas Southern scored on five of its attempts, while Alabama State scored on six of its attempts, with Mercedes Padilla scoring the game-winning goal to give the Lady Hornets the win and a spot in the title game.
This is the third consecutive championship match appearance for the Alabama State and the fourth in the last five years. Alabama State is looking to capture back-to-back conference titles.
The championship match will be Sunday at 11 a.m CT.
