Women's OTF Championship: Day One Recap

NORMAL, Ala. - The 2016 Southwestern Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships kicked off Friday morning from Alabama A&M University’s Louis Crews Stadium. Events completed today were the 10,000 meters, hammer throw, pole vault and day one events of the heptathlon.

DAY ONE RESULTS
Alabama State's Sade Lavallias and Shakalia Williams took the top two spots in the opening event of the meet, as Lavallias won the women’s 10,000-meter run with a time of 40:12.82. Williams was second (40:39.20) and Grambling’s Halima Chepkwony was third (41:01.31).
After four of seven events, Prairie View A&M’s Camirey Jackson leads with 2808 points after day one of the women’s heptathlon. Teammate Jada Curbeam is in second with 2781 points, and Summer Gilliam of Arkansas-Pine Bluff currently sits in third with 2659 points.
Southern’s Jamira Russ and Georgeanna Felder finished 1-2 in the women’s shot put, as Russ won it with a toss of 49.05m. Felder finished runner-up with a distance of 47.96m, beating out third-place finisher Sireta Roach of Arkansas-Pine Bluff (47.86m) by 0.1 meter.
Alabama State’s Quinta Collier cleared 3.21m in the pole vault to take home the gold medal. Christine Powers (Prairie View) and Melissa Pena (Texas Southern) both cleared 3.11m, but Powers claimed second by virtue of having less unsuccessful attempts than Pena, who was third.
