NORMAL, Ala. - The 2016 Southwestern Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships began Friday from Alabama A&M University’s Louis Crews Stadium. Events completed today were the 10,000 meters, hammer throw and day one events of the decathlon.

MEN’S DAY ONE RESULTS

Grambling State’s Hassan Chepkwony (33:47.61) won the men’s 10,000 meter run. Aaron Albert of Mississippi Valley State (33:55.60) was second, and Prairie View A&M’s Syed Hussain finished third (34:11.39).

Lawrence Williams of Southern outdueled Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s Miles Dortch in the javelin, as Williams won it with a toss of 57.77 meters. Dortch (56.36m) was second, and in third was Texas Southern’s Ahmad Francis (47.48m).

Maurice Jones of Alabama A&M leads the men’s decathlon after five events with a point total of 3470. O’Shane Shaw (Alabama State) is second with 3032 points, and Southern’s Khalil Upshaw is third (3001).

Reginald Redding of Southern won the men’s hammer throw with a toss of 50.83m. Terrell Perry of Texas Southern (47.84m) edged out Alabama A&M’s Kessy Bell (47.45m) for second, as Bell claimed third.
