NEW ORLEANS – Jackson State advances to play Texas Southern this afternoon at 3 PM in the semifinals of the SWAC Baseball Tournament after defeating Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 4-2, on Friday at Wesley Barrow Stadium.
Jackson State improves to 34-25 on the year while Arkansas-Pine Bluff completes the season at 22-25.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff scored in the first inning as Michael Bradley scored on a fielding error by Jackson State’s Lakon Wilson.
Jackson State took the lead in the second inning on Sam Campbell’s two-run home run to right field.
The Tigers added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth. Cornelius Copeland led off the inning with a triple then scored on UAPB’s CJ Lewington pick-off attempt error at first. Jesus Santana collected a sacrifice fly RBI, scoring CJ Newsome. Copeland led the Tigers with three hits and a run scored.
UABP tallied a run in the top of the sixth when Aderly Perez hit a single up the middle to pick up Jaqueese Moore.
Jackson State’s Miguel Yrigoyen (9-3) tossed a nine-inning complete game, scattering two unearned runs on four hits, seven strike outs and three walks.
UAPB’s starter CJ Lewington (2-5) gave up four runs (three earned) on seven hits and walked three in a 6.1 inning effort to take the loss.
