HOUSTON, Texas – Marcus Romain scored 11 of Mississippi Valley State’s first 18 points en route to a career-high 32 point effort and a 87-73 victory over Grambling State Tuesday afternoon in first round action of the 2016 Toyota SWAC Basketball Tournament inside the Toyota Center.
Romain finished the afternoon shooting 8-of-12 on the day to go along with 11 rebounds while also sinking 12 of his 13 free throw attempts. Latrell Love fell two boards shy of also having a double-double, scoring a career-high 21 points and hauling in 8 boards. Isaac Williams added 20 points for the Delta Devils.
Ervin Mitchell scored 19 points for the Tigers (7-24) with Deonte Hearns adding 15.
Grambling came back from a 14-point second-half deficit to get within one, 57-56, with eight minutes to go before Ta'Jay Henry scored for MVSU. Then, with 7:02 left, personal and technical fouls were whistled on the Tigers and Romain made all five free throws for an eight-point advantage. Grambling didn't get closer than seven after that.
