HOUSTON, Texas – Player of the Year Norianna Haynes led Alcorn State to a 62-43 win over Mississippi Valley State during the first game of the 2016 Toyota SWAC Basketball Tournament at the Toyota Center. The Lady Braves will face Southern tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.
Haynes scored a team-high 14 points with seven rebounds and one steal, while Jazmin Strane grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds with eight points and three assists.
The Devilettes were paced by Zemoria Jernigan who tallied a game-high 17 points with four assists. Ashley Beals recorded 14 points and five rebounds, while Feleshia Walters caught 12 boards with seven points and two steals.
The first half belonged to the Lady Braves as they finished with a 24-point advantage.
In the first quarter, Haynes managed six points after shooting 50 percent from the field. ALCN would end the session with an 11-point scoring edge. Jernigan led the Devilettes with five points.
MVSU was only allowed two points in the second quarter, while the Lady Braves increased their score by 15. Lindsay Littlejohn and Haynes went into halftime leading all players with eight points each.
The Devilettes performed better in the second half, tying with the Braves in the third quarter at 17 and passing ALCN in the fourth by five points.
Ultimately, the Lady Braves took the first win of the tournament by 19 points.
ALCN shot 39.1 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from three-point range and 47.4 percent at the line.
The Devilettes forced three more turnovers than they committed at 28. In shooting, MVSU made 17 of 54 attempts.
