2016 Indoor Track and Field Championships - Day One Recaps

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The 2016 Southwestern Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships kicked off Saturday morning from the Birmingham Crossplex Finals for the field events, shot put, long jump and high jump were completed today along with the 3,000 Meter Run and the Distance Medley Relay. The remaining of the events with be completed on Sunday.

HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE DAY
Alabama State's Artrailia LeSane took home the gold in the women's 3,000 meter run with a time of 10:20.81. Southern’s Ebonique Diaz finished second with a time of 10:40.53 and coming in third was Grambling State’s Halima Chepkwony with a time of 10:50.59.
For the second straight season, Sireta Roach of Arkansas-Pine Bluff broke her own record en route to another championship in the women's Shot Put, winning the event with a toss of 15.01m (49-03.00 feet), besting her previous record of 14.14m. Texas Southern’s Shamiya Blake was second with a mark of 13.63m (44-08.75 feet), and coming in third place was Georgeanna Felder of Southern with a throw of 13.21m (43-04.25 feet).
Breanca Woods of Texas Southern successfully defended the women’s long jump title, winning the event with a jump of 5.79m (19-00.00 feet). Teammate Breana Dockery was second with a mark of 5.61m (18-05.00 feet) and Arkansas-Pine Bluff's Sydnee Worlds came in third thanks to a jump of 5.57m (18-03.25 feet).
For the third consecutive year, Alabama State's Alicia Terrell was crowned as SWAC high jump championship, winning the event with a jump of 1.75m (5-08.75), which bested her previous personal best (1.71m). In second place, was Prairie View A&M’s Nekiesha Bailey (1.71m; 5-07.25 feet) and PVAMU’s Chantel Hamilton came in third with a jump of 1.63m (5-04.25 feet).
Alabama State's Women Distance Medley team repeated as SWAC champions with a time of 12:07.45. The team consisted of Artraila LeSane, Shantia Wilson, Tatiana Etienne and Brandee Ebert. Grambling State came in second with a time of 12:52.62. Finishing third was Southern with a time of 13:03.98.
