Box Score

JACKSON, Miss. -  Southern outlasted UAPB in a hard-fought four-setter to advance in the SWAC Volleyball Tournament.

Southern claimed the advantage early on, and appeared as if it would run away with the set after building an 18-13 lead. The Lady Lions wouldn't go quietly, closing the gap down the stretch. The Jaguars held off the charge, taking the 1-0 set lead.

In set two, it was a near repeat of the opening frame. Southern netted eight of the first 12 points of the second set. UAPB managed to knot things up, but Southern regained the lead. The Lady Lions managed to get as close as 21-18 down the stretch, but the Jaguars were stronger in the final moments to go ahead two sets to nil.

UAPB was the early aggressor of set three, picking up the upper hand by picking up six of the stanza's initial nine points. A Paige Hall kill helped curb the Lions' flurry, but only momentarily as they stayed ahead through the initial goings of the set.

The Jaguars made their move at the midpoint of the frame, eventually taking a 20-16 advantage on the strength of a 12-5 run aided by kills from Shelby Jolly. UAPB's Kendalle Howard helped key a turnaround for the Lions, as she smacked down two kills while the Lady Lions took a 22-21 lead. A Howard ace sent things to a fourth set.

However, that set belonged to the Jaguars, who used a 9-2 start to jump ahead. UAPB clawed back and eventually took a 18-17 lead. The sides traded blows through the remainder, ending up deadlocked at 23, but consecutive UAPB errors sealed it for Southern.

The Jaguars await the winner of the Texas Southern vs. Jackson State quarterfinal, and that semifinal will be at 3 pm tomorrow.
