NEW ORLEANS, La. – Jackson State University routed Prairie View A&M University 10-1 to continue on its quest for a SWAC title. The Tigers (31-24) take on the loser between Southern and Alabama State at 9 a.m. Friday. Prairie View concluded its season at 15-36 overall.
JSU outhit the Panthers 14-6 with five earning multiple hits. They were led by Jesus Santana who finished 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Jevon Jacobs pitched a complete nine innings, giving up one earned run, one walk, and striking out a game and tournament high 13 batters.
Jackson State jumped out on top in the second. With two outs and a runner on second, Kendal Davis sent a full count pitch to center, scoring the opening run. He then scored the eventual game winner when Gary Thomas singled through the right side.
The Tigers added four more on in the third and one in the fourth and fifth innings to extend their lead to 7-0.
Prairie View finally responded in the sixth. Walter Wells led off with a double down the left field line. He advanced to third on a groundout and scored when Angel Avalos grounded out to second.
But Jackson State put two more across to secure the win and advance in the tournament.
