NORMAL, Ala. – Day one of the 2015 Southwestern Athletic Conference Track and Field Championship is complete.  The three day event is taking place at Alabama A&M University inside of Louis Crews Stadium.

Alabama State’s Paige Rankine won the morning’s opening event in the 10,000 meter run with a time of 36:28.  Her teammate Artrailia Lesane came in second place at 34:32.

Karena Foster of Texas Southern claimed the Hammer Throw with a distance of 49.97. Tyler Anderson of Grambling State won the Pole Vault 3.11 meters.

Four events were completed in the Heptathlon and after day one, Tatiana David leads the way with 2,938 points. She is followed by Alicia Terrell who finished the day with 2,860 points.

Overall, six-time defending champion Alabama State is in front of the women's competition with 37 points. Prairie View is in second with 21. Texas Southern accumulated 18 points and is in third place followed by Grambling State and Southern who are tied for fourth with 11 points each.  Mississippi Valley State totaled 10 points followed by Alabama A&M (6), Jackson State (2), and Alcorn State (1) rounding out the rankings.   

On the men’s side, Jesus Hernandez finished first in the 10,000 meter run clocking in at 33:18.  Jose Medina of Texas Southern came in second at 33:39

Others to earn individual titles on the men’s side included Phillip McClain taking first in the Javelin with a throw of 63.05. Charles Hughes earned first place in the Shot Put with a distance of 12:17.  Micah Hill claimed first in the Hammer Throw  at 53.16.

The men's Decathlon is also at the midway point. After five events, Darryl Jones of Alcorn State is leading with 3,567 points. Afton McClammy from Alabama A&M with 3,445 is currently sitting second.

Grambling State is leading overall with 42 points. Texas Southern is in second place with 24 points, Southern is in third place with 18 with Mississippi Valley State sitting in fourth place. Jackson State is in fifth place, followed by, Alabama A&M, Alcorn State, Prairie View.
