In-State Rivals Meet in the 2015 SWAC Bowling Championship

ARLINGTON, Texas – Prairie View A&M University and Texas Southern University will play in the 2015 Bowling Tournament Championship match Sunday afternoon, which will air on ESPNU Tuesday, March 31st.

Bracket play was decided by the best four-out-of-seven games.

In the first round, Alabama A&M University (194, 192, 184, 157, 216, 200) defeated Texas Southern University (134, 156, 208, 171, 163, 170), 4-2. The Bulldogs moved on to face the number one seed, Jackson State University. Alabama State University (193, 240, 187, 142, 147, 158) also claimed victory in this set, passing Southern University and A&M College (156, 132, 158, 160, 170, 164), 4-3. The Hornets moved over on the bracket to play the Panthers of Prairie View. Both losing teams, TSU and SU, met each other to determine which team moved on and which team would be eliminated from the tournament.

Southern (179, 154, 129, 167, 139) was eliminated after its match against TSU (137, 205, 194, 172, 155), while Texas Southern played the winner of match six. Moving up on the tournament bracket to play each other were undefeated teams, Jackson State and Prairie View. JSU (166, 215, 185, 176, 191, 192) bowled pass AAMU (199, 179, 202, 167, 190, 166) to advance, while PVAMU (205, 210, 199, 188, 171, 206) collected its win against ASU (202, 209, 143, 226, 175, 151). The Hornets played the Bulldogs in the next round, which determined the next team to leave the tournament - AAMU.

Prairie View (205, 210, 214, 258) punched its spot in the championship match as it defeated Jackson State (170, 188, 178, 183), 4-0. Alabama A&M (168, 167, 204, 172, 157) was knocked out of the tournament after it went up against in-state rival, Alabama State (170, 224, 168, 197, 166), falling 4-1.

In a 4-3 win, TSU (188, 186, 171, 195, 171, 160, 216) eliminated ASU (174, 182, 200, 148, 193, 179, 176) from the tournament in its next round. Texas Southern won the first two games, while Alabama State secured the third. The Tigers battled back to grab the fourth set win, but ASU earned two straight victories – leaving the score 3-3. The fight for strikes continued in the tiebreaker set, ultimately putting the win in the hands of Texas Southern. TSU was decided to go up against Jackson State to decide which team would play Prairie View in the championship game.

TSU (177, 145, 178, 190, 200) dropped JSU (171, 188, 158, 155, 177), 4-1, in the final match of the day – claiming its position in the 2015 SWAC Bowling Tournament Championship game. This is PVAMU's fourth trip to the finals in the last six years. The team is seeking their third title in the program's history. Tomorrow's game will mark Texas Southern's first appearance in a championship match, going back six plus seasons.
