2015 SWAC Women's Indoor Championship Recap: Day One

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The 2015 Southwestern Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships kicked off Saturday morning. For the fourth consecutive year, the Birmingham Crossplex has been the designated facility. Finals for the field events, shot put, long jump and high jump were completed today along with the 3,000 Meter Run and the Distance Medley Relay. The remaining of the events with be completed on Sunday.

HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE DAY
Alabama State's Paige Rankine conquered the women's 3,000 meter run as the 2015 champion with a time of 10:01.29, less than a second away from beating the SWAC record of 10:00.34. Artrailia LeSane (Alabama State) finished second with a time of 10:05.81 and completing the race in third place was Mississippi Valley's Deja Davis with a time of 10:45.36. The all-time Crossplex record is 9:14.10.
In the women's Shot Put, beating her SWAC record of 14.08m from last year, Sireta roach claims another championship title with a throw of 14.14m. Finishing in second place was Southern's Briana Radford with a throw of 13.49. Rounding out the Shot Put events was Dominique Edwards from Alcorn State with a throw of 13.00m.
Breanca Woods (Texas Southern) was crowned the long jump champion with a jump of 5.83m (19-01.50ft). Arkansas-Pine Bluff's Sydnee Worlds finished second with a jump of 5.69m (18-08.00ft) and Briana Burke placed third. She jumped 5.64m (18-06.00ft).
For the second consecutive year, Alabama State's Alicia Terrell claims the SWAC high jump championship with a jump of 1.67m (5-05.75). She tied with her highest jump from last year. In second place, finishing with more attempts, Sydney Edwards (Texas Southern) jumped a height of 1.67 (5-05.75) as well. Coming in third place was Alabama State's Kadijah Gordon with a jump of 1.59m (5-02.50).
Alabama State's Women Distance Medley team set a new record as the 2015 SWAC Champs with a time of 11:56.60, beating their time from last year of 12:08.05. The team consisted of Artraila LeSane, Jerrica Mahone, Tatiana Etienne and Paige Rankine. Southern University came in second with a time of 12:51.43. Finishing third was Prairie View A&M with a time of 12:53.98.
