2015 Soccer Tournament Recaps: Day 2

Alabama State 3, Prairie View A&M

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Alabama State secured its place into the 2015 Soccer Championship game after sweeping Prairie View A&M, 3-0, Friday afternoon at the John Hunt Soccer Complex. The last time Lady Hornets made it to the championship was 2013.

With a hat trick to win the game, Ariela Lewis spearheaded the Lady Hornets berth into the 2015 Soccer Championship game. ALST led with a 18-9 shot advantage with Gianna Guyot and PVAM’s Dominique Dillon tying with a game-high five saves.

For the first score of the match, Lewis beat the keeper, putting the ball in at the right post. She would not score again until the 77 minute mark where she got inside the box from the left side. Lewis’ last score came after being assisted by Aaliyah Lewis.

A group of Lady Panthers took shots, but it proved not enough as PVAM was eliminated from the tournament.

ALST will play Howard Sunday morning at 11 a.m. for a chance to win the championship title. 

 

Howard 1, Mississippi Valley State 1 (4-3 shootout win)

HUNSVILLE, Ala. – The regular season champions, Mississippi Valley State, fell to Howard Friday afternoon in a 4-3 shootout at the John Hunt Soccer Complex.

Rasheeda Ansari ran down the middle toward the right, then back up the middle to put away the first goal of the game. Nykosi Simmons later used a headbutt to tie the match, 1-1 at the 34:43 minute mark. Neither team would score again, sending the game into overtime.

No shots were taken in the first 10 minute session, but the second overtime realm proved more productive with each squad kicking two goal attempts.

After the finish of the second overtime, the game went into a five-member shootout. In the end, HOWD finished the game with a 4-3 score advantage and will compete for the title against Alabama State Sunday at 11 a.m.
