2015 Soccer Tournament Recaps: Day 1

Mississippi Valley State 2, Alabama A&M 0

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. –
Mississippi Valley State (13-7-1) advanced to the semi-finals after defeating Alabama A&M (3-12-0), 2-0, Thursday morning at the John Hunt Soccer Complex.

Nykosi Simmons used an assist from Karenth Zabala to score the first goal of the game five minutes into the match. Mariana Balbao then pushed the Devilettes ahead, making the score 2-0.

MVSU took 14 shots in the first half to AAMU’s one.

Neither team would score again – the game ending with the Devilettes holding a 25-1 shot advantage.

Lauren Saunders took the only shot of the game for the Lady Bulldogs.

With this loss, AAMU is eliminated from the tournament, and MVSU will face the winner of Game 2 tomorrow at 1 p.m.

 

Howard 2, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 0

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. –
Howard claimed a shutout victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff Thursday afternoon at the John Hunt Soccer Complex. 

HOWD set the tone for the match after Anna Mitchell found the back of the net at the 15 minute mark. Makela Davidson added to the Bison resume, sending the ball into the goal after an assist from Jasmin Miller.

Rebecca Holmes led offensively for the Lady Lions with five shots, two on target. Ciera Fenwick also chipped in four shots, two on goals.

The Bison only held a one-shot advantage, with Mackenzie Diotte collecting a game-high seven saves.

The Lady Lions were eliminated from the tournament as the Bison advanced to the semi-finals, facing Mississippi Valley State at 1 p.m.

 

Alabama State 3, Texas Southern 0

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Texas Southern fell to Alabama State, 3-0, Thursday afternoon at the John Hunt Soccer Complex. With this win, the Lady Hornets move on to play in game 6 tomorrow at 1 p.m. against the winner of game 4.

The sister duo of Ariela Lewis and Aaliyah Lewis reigned supreme during the match as Ar. Lewis registered two goals and Aa. Lewis secured one score.

Ar. Lewis managed the first goal of the game after breaking free in the left field, finishing unassisted. She went on to add another score at the 66 minute mark. Aa. Lewis pulled in her goal after coming down the middle, scoring with a high kick.

The Lady Tigers managed many shots, outshooting the Lady Hornets, 24-12, but it proved not enough with TXSO being eliminated from the tournament.

 

Prairie View A&M 1, Jackson State 0

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – In overtime, Prairie View A&M blanked Jackson State, 1-0, Thursday afternoon at the John Hunt Soccer Complex. With this loss, the Lady Tigers were eliminated from the tournament.

No goals were made in the first or second half, but many attempts were present.

Arianna Rountree got close, but the ball soared an inch too high, missing the back of the net. A breakaway by Alicia Cooper in the last five seconds seemed promising for the Lady Panthers, but the shot was placed too far right, sending the match into overtime.

In dramatic fashion, Khalisha Bond scored the winning goal with one second remaining on the clock. Almost every player from both teams was battling in the box, but it was Bond that was able to connect foot to ball to net.

The Lady Panthers will face Alabama State tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the semi-final round.
