• This week may feature a potential preview of the 2015 SWAC Football Championship when Prairie View A&M heads to Lorman, Miss. to take on defending champion Alcorn State. Prairie View A&M would need Grambling State to falter down the stretch to have a chance to overtake the Tigers in the SWAC Western Division, however. This game will also mark the return of Willie Simmons to Alcorn State. Simmons, the current head coach of the Panthers, was the offensive coordinator of the Braves from 2012-2014 and helped guide Alcorn State to the SWAC title last season.
• Southern’s Willie Quinn is on the cusp of history after his FCS career-record tying sixth kickoff return touchdown versus Texas Southern on Oct. 24. Thus far, Quinn has five return touchdowns (4 kick, 1 punt) this year and he has nine such returns for his career (6 kick, 3 punt). If Quinn can take one more kickoff return to the house this year, he will break the all-time FCS record, which he now shares with former Hampton return man Jerome Mathis, for most kickoff return TDs in a career (6). He’d also tie the single-season record for most combined kick return touchdowns (6). For what it’s worth, the record for most combined return touchdowns (kick and punt) in a career is 11, which is held by former Florida A&M return specialist LeRoy Vann.
• Alabama State boasts one of the most effective red zone offenses in the nation, as the Hornets rank fourth with a .931 scoring percentage in that area of the field. In 29 trips, Alabama State has come away with points on 27 occasions, with 24 of those scores being touchdowns.
• Alcorn State quarterback Lennoris Footman’s 274 rushing yards is a SWAC record by a quarterback and was only 42 yards shy of the FCS record set in 2001 by Ryan Fuqua of Portland State. Footman carried the ball 16 times vs 42 carries for Fuqua
