BATON ROUGE, La. – Prairie View A&M defeated Alcorn State 3-2 (21-25, 25-17, 21-25, 25-18, 15-4) at the Horace H. Moody Intramural Center in the loser’s bracket of the 2015 SWAC Women’s Volleyball Tournament.
After back-and-forth action in the first four sets, the deciding period was all Prairie View A&M (9-24), as the Panthers rode a 9-2 set-opening run en route to victory.
The Braves jumped on the Panthers quickly, building a 12-5 lead in the first set. The Panthers were able to thin out Alcorn State’s advantage, eventually tying it at 20. The Braves regrouped and were able to close out the frame on a 4-1 run.
In the second set, Prairie View and Alcorn State (12-22) traded offense, but the Panthers sustained a push to go up 17-11. The Panthers were able to protect their lead and tie the match at one set per side.
After building a 15-5 lead, Alcorn State had to weather a Prairie View comeback that, at one point, saw the Panthers get to within three (23-20). Eventually, the Braves won the set on an errant serve by Prairie View’s Calli Jordan Hensch.
In the fourth set, the roles were reversed as Prairie View roared out to a quick start only to have to withstand a rally attempt by Alcorn State to claim the stanza.
MoKeysha Shanklin led the way for the Panthers, accounting for 21 kills in the match and four in the period, including the game-winner. She added six blocks and accumulated a .405 attack percentage. Ana Kiso picked up 42 assists, nine digs, three kills and two blocks and Christen Augustine had 17 digs and four assists.
Lurlethia Jones led Alcorn State with 15 kills. Leticia Gonzalez chipped in 20 assists, six digs, two service aces.
The loss ends Alcorn State’s season, while Prairie View A&M advances to day two of competition.
