ALABAMA STATE 3, PRAIRIE VIEW A&M 1Box ScoreBATON ROUGE, La. – Alabama State claimed a 3-1 (25-11, 25-13, 24-26, 25-18) victory over Prairie View A&M at the Horace H. Moody Intramural Center to open the 2015 SWAC Women’s Volleyball Tournament.
After allowing a point on the opening serve of the match, the East No. 2 seeded-Lady Hornets (19-13) responded with nine unanswered points to claim the advantage in the first set en route to 25-11 victory.
Alabama State claimed the second set 25-13, but Prairie View A&M (8-24) collected the third set after fending off a 24-21 deficit with a 5-0 set-ending scoring run that staved off Alabama State’s potential match point. The Lady Hornets secured the match when – after being tied at 12 with the Panthers in set four – they scored seven of the next nine points to pad a lead that Prairie View was ultimately unable to surmount.
Myla Marshall led the Lady Hornets with 15 kills – on a .481 attack percentage – and eight blocks. Kori Kutsch picked up 43 assists. Jamie Coleman chipped in 24 digs. Chelsey Scott added 13 kills, and Rachel Smith had 11 kills and seven digs.
For Prairie View A&M, Christen Augustine led with 15 digs. Randi Hunter had a team-high 17 kills, and Calli Jordan-Hensch added 12 kills and seven digs. Ana Kiso dished out 35 assists.
With the victory, Alabama State advanced to the winner’s bracket while Prairie View dropped to the loser’s bracket.
