BATON ROUGE, La. – Alabama A&M collected the first win of the SWAC Volleyball Tournament with a 3-1 (17-25, 25-19, 25-13, 25-17) victory over Southern University at Clifford Seymour Gym on Friday. Alabama improves to 12-23 while Southern falls to 9-20 on the season.

Ashundria McNeal led the Alabama A&M offense with 16 kills, seven digs and two blocks. Savannah Blackiston chipped in nine putaways, eight digs and one solo block while Megan Butler dished out 26 assists, 10 digs, six kills, one ace and a block. Drea Matthews picked up six kills and seven digs as Megan Butler collected eight digs. Alabama A&M posted a .148 (41 kills, 23 errors, 122 attempts) hitting percentage.

Southern was led by Melodie Malone’s 11 kills and six digs while Chinasa Ekweariri posted nine putaways and one dig. Vaterra Calais dished out 20 assists and 10 digs while Jamie Selleneit sent out 14 helpers and seven digs. Diamond Williams collected 10 digs and one assist while Jasmine Middelton had seven kills and three digs. Southern finished with a .107 (39 kills, 26 errors, 121 attempts) hitting percentage.

Alabama A&M will face the winner of the Jackson State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff match at 3:00 p.m. at Clifford Seymour Gym, Southern moves to Moody Gym and will take on the losing team from the same match-up.
