Grambling State Wins 2015 SWAC Championship

CLINTON, Miss. – With 61 points, Grambling State men’s cross country team won the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship Saturday at Choctaw Trails. It is the team's first title since 2011. Grambling was led by freshman Hassan Chepkwony, who finished first with a time of 25:56.81. Chepkwony was also honored as 2015 Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Year.
Grambling State Head Coach Bertram Lovell was named SWAC Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year.
Along with Chepkwony, Prairie View A&M's Aaron Austin, Mississippi Valley State's Aaron Albert, Grambling State's Montieco Harris and Jackson State's James Curtis finished second through fifth to earn first-team All-SWAC honors.
Second-Team All-SWAC consisted of Prairie View A&M's Syed Hussain, Texas Southern's Abraham Morales, Southern's Andrew Pena, Alcorn State's Mario Martinez and Alabama State's Bryont Brown.
In the team competition, Texas Southern placed second with a score of 66, and Alabama State came in third with 83 points.
