LORMAN, Miss. - Alcorn State used a big second quarter to top Lousiana College 52-10 and earn its second home win on the season in Spinks-Casem Stadium. The Braves defense shut Louisana down after the first quarter, led by Robinson who tied for a team-high of six tackles, two for a loss, and recorded a pass breakup. John Gibbs Jr. finished with a game-high 189 passing yards and recorded two touchdowns. Alcorn improves to 2-1 with the win.
Alabama-Birmingham def. ALABAMA A&M, 41-14

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Despite a strong showing early, Alabama A&M fell 41-14 Saturday afternoon to the University of Alabama at Birmingham on Legion Field. Rasha Anderson opened scoring with a 77-yard touchdown on a punt return. After senior captain Jaymason Lee went down early, Montauri Smith stepped up to run the offense. He connected with Octayviu Miles for a 57 yard touchdown at the beginning of the second quarter to extend the Bulldogs lead. But the Blazers responded with six unanswered touchdowns to earn the win. Bryan Brower led the defense with a game-high 10 tackles, seven unassisted and one for a loss. A&M moves to 1-2 overall.
Bethune-Cookman def. GRAMBLING STATE, 36-23

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Grambling State led by one point heading into the fourth quarter, but could not hold off No. 13 Bethune-Cookman on the road Saturday as the Tigers fell 36-23. Grambling (0-3) out-threw the Wildcats on the arm of Stephen Johnson who finished with a game-high 220 and two touchdowns. Dominique Leake took a 75-yard catch to the house and finished with a game-high 82 receiving yards. Linebacker Aaron Breed led the defense. He finished with a game-high 11 tackles, one for a loss, and earned half a sack.
HBCU Classic
TEXAS SOUTHERN def. Central State University, 30-16

NASSAU, Bahamas - The Texas Southern Tigers football team defeated Central State by a score of 30-16 in the Inaugural HBCUX Classic. The Tigers improved their record to 3-0 with the win. Jamal Small went 17-of-31 for 186 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively Texas Southern was led by lineback Darian Claiborne who tallied a team high seven tackles for the night. Larry Clark III had five receptions for 81 yards with a long of 25 yards. Texas Southern returns home next weekend to face Alabama A&M at 7:00 p.m. at BBVA Compass Stadium. (Recap)

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Alabama State used a 370-yard rushing night to help defeat Mississippi Valley State 47-22 to open Southwestern Athletic Conference play. Senior Malcolm Cyrus once again hit the 170 yards rushing mark when he rushed for a season-high 171 yards rushing, besting last week's total of 170 yards. He also scored from eight yards out, marking his first rushing touchdown of the season.The Hornets (2-1/1-0 SWAC) finished with 539 yards of total offense, as ASU threw for 169 yards, led by Daniel Duhart who completed 10 of his 21 attempts for 143 yards and a touchdown. MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The 25th Annual Southern Heritage Classic was the first for Jackson State head football coach Harold Jackson and it is one that he will not likely forget anytime soon. The JSU Tigers fell from the ranks of the unbeaten, losing 35-7 to non-conference rival No. 22 ranked Tennessee State Saturday night before an announced crowd of 46,914. Tennessee State dominated the game from start to finish, en route to scoring 35 first half points. TSU finished with 18 first downs, 137 rushing yards, 187 passing yards, 324 total yards and possessed the ball for 33:53. JSU’s offense struggled for the majority of the night. The Tigers were not able to get the running game off the ground and QB La Montiez Ivy was under constant pressure. JSU finished with eight first downs, minus one rushing yards, 139 passing yards, 138 total yards and held the ball for 26:07. (Recap)

LAKE CHARLES, La. - Missed opportunities haunted the Panthers all game long as McNeese State handed Prairie View A&M a 48-16 loss before a near capacity crowd at Cowboy Stadium on Saturday night. Jerry Lovelocke's game-high 242 yards came on 21 completions. His primary target, Greg Thurman, finished with a game-high 67 reception yards from five catches. And Damond Jackson led the defense with a game-high nine tackles, six solo. Northwestern State def. SOUTHERN, 51-27

BATON ROUGE, La. - Despite outscoring Northwestern State in the second half, Southern University could not comeback from a slow first half start in its 51-27 loss Saturday at A.W. Mumford Stadium. Outstanding individual performances highlighted the Jaguars bout. Tyre Bracken picked up a game-high 97 rushing yards and one touchdown, averaging over 13 yards per carry. Both Willie Quinn and Justin Morgan earned over 100 receiving yards and a touchdown a piece. Morgan finished with a game-high 109 yards with Quinn right behind at 107, respectively. On the other side of the ball, Justin Bethancourt and Blake Monroe tied for the game-high of nine tackles. And Brian McCain earned the games lone sack.
