Southern Defends Crown, Wins Fifth Consecutive Title

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Darnesha Moore defeated Akshatha Ananth to hand Southern the 2014 Southwestern Athletic Conference Tennis Championship with a 4-1 win over Jackson State on Sunday at City Park / Pepsi Tennis Center.
Moore earned tournament MVP after capturing the win at the No. 4 singles position winning, 6-3, 6-1. Her victory sealed SU's (10-8) fifth consecutive women's tennis conference tournament crown.
The Lady Jaguars opened the match 1-0 after D. Moore and Gabrielle Moore, along with, Camara Davis and Morgan Taylor, took 8-3 wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Soon after, Laura Syori (No. 1) and Kendall Bunch (No.5) took their matches in two sets to help pull out the victory.
JSU (9-14) plugged in its only win for the match behind Kessica Jayapalan's 6-4, 6-1, win over Davis in No. 6 singles.
The Lady Jaguars are now winners of 13 titles and the first team to win five-in-a-row.
