Texas Southern 5, Prairie View 0 BOX SCORE
PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Texas Southern University defeated Prairie View on Friday afternoon at the PVAMU Softball Complex. The Lady Tigers shutout the Lady Panther 5-0 in conference play.

Cross-town rivals last met in 2013 at the SWAC softball tournament with Prairie View A&M winning an elimination game over TSU.

Olivia Lacewell (1-1) took the loss for PVAMU (6-15, 2-4) giving up five hits, five runs and striking out two.  The Lady Panthers were unable to score a run while attempting six hits.

For TSU (10-13, 4-2) Jeneice Tillman (3-3) collected the win in seven innings. She gave up six hits and struck out six Lady Panthers.

Thomasina Garza collected three RBI, including a grand slam for the Lady Tigers while teammate Chelsea Guenther was able to get on the board with two hits.


Jackson State 5, Alabama State 5 BOX SCORE
MONTGOMERY, Ala. -  Jackson State University defeated Alabama State  5-4 on Saturday at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.

Down 5-3, heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, ASU was able to pull with one run of JSU, when Meagan Dixon, who reached base on single to the shortstop, came in a Kendall Core single to right field making to score read 5-4.

The Lady Hornets threatened to tie the ball game after Dixon's score with runners on second and third. Raven Walker, who was called on to pinch run for Diauna Nelson who bunted her way on, advanced to third on Core's single. The next ASU batter, Jazzmine Romero would reach on a squeeze bunt that advanced Core to third and Walker would be called out at the plate. After Romero stole second, in her next at bat Brittney Wilson would ground out to second giving the game its final.

Both clubs got through the first two innings with no score, but in the top half of the third inning the Lady Tigers managed to plate five runs, on five hits.

The Lady Hornets, in their half of the third, scored twice on two hits. With one out Aleesa Yanez drove a single to center field. Dixon would draw a walk, with Nelson laying down a sacrifice bunt that advanced both Yanez and Dixon. Next, Jackson State would intentionally walk Core to make it a force out situation with the two outs and the bases loaded. With the bags juiced and two outs, Romero would single to left field scoring Yanez and Dixon. Wilson grounded out to third to close out the inning at 5-2.

In the sixth, ASU would add one more run when Wilson, who reached on a single and advancing on a Laura Aguilar sacrifice bunt, would come around on a Valerie Centeno single for a 5-3 score.

ASU would out hit Jackson State 11-8, but strand 10 base runners over the course of the day.

Breea Jamerson collected the win for JSU, she pitched in seven innings giving up 11 hits and four runs with only one strikeout.


Mississippi Valley 13, Alcorn 4 BOX SCORE

ITTA BENA -- The Mississippi Valley State softball team opened up its home conference play Saturday with a pair of wins over Alcorn State. 

The Devilettes defeated the Lady Braves 13-4 in the first game before overcoming Alcorn, 1-0, in the final game of the day.

MVSU's bats woke up midway through the game when the Devilettes scored 12 of its 13 runs in the final three innings. Valley finished with 11 hits and took advantage of six

Alcorn errors while sprinting to its third SWAC victory of the season. Omeshia Moffett led the way, going 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. Her three hits marked a season high for the Hattiesburg native. Courtenay Brooks and Jahcenda Garrett chipped in a pair of hits each while Garrett and Natalia Covarrubias each had two RBIs. Tenna Patterson (4-10) won her fourth game of the season, allowing just two earned runs on three hits with four strikeouts. Cassandra Rivera had four strikeouts in two innings of relief work.

In game two MVSU withstood a late run by Alcorn State to defeat the Lady Braves, 1-0. MVSU's Tenna Patterson struck out two Alcorn batters in the top of the 7th inning with the bases loaded to secure the second consecutive win for the Devilettes (6-25, 4-3).

MVSU's lone run came in the second inning when Courtenay Brooks scored following an Alcorn error.

Deja Talton paced the Devilettes with two of its six hits. Cassandra Rivera (2-14) won her second game of the season, giving up just one hit and one walk in four innings of action on the mound. Patterson surrendered four hits and struck out four Alcorn batters in three innings of relief work.

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Texas Southern swept Prairie View in a double-header on Saturday afternoon at the PVAMU Softball Complex.

In game one the Lady Tigers defeated the Lady Panthers 13-3. TSU (11-13, 5-2) went 13-for-33 at the plate while collecting 13 RBI. Brianna Parker had three RBI while teammates Monica Castillo, Krystalani Yockman and Fitima Alvizo each record two apiece.

TSU went up 1-0 in the third after an RBI double and upped its margin to 2-0 in the fourth with a sacrifice fly.  PVAMU (6-16, 2-5)  scored its first run of the series in the fourth as Shontel Lopez hit an RBI single to bring home Brenicia Woods.  However, the rally stalled as TSU forced a strikeout and an inning-ending grounder.

With two outs in the fifth, PVAMU gave up a single and a walk which paved the way for a three-run homer by Brianna Parker for a 5-1 lead.  PVAMU fought back in the sixth as Jazmin Hicks and Peyton Simms hit RBIs for a 5-3 deficit but TSU broke the game open in the seventh with eight runs to pull away for good.

Cally Falls fell to 3-5 on the season with the loss while Lopez and Lexus Walker finished with two hits apiece.

Brianna Bryant (1-0) was on the mound for TSU, she pitched in 5.1 innings while only giving up seven hits and three runs while striking out four.

Game two was nearly a mirror image of game one as TSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first and never looked back in a 9-1 win.

TSU scored four quick runs to open the first inning and PVAMU struggled to recover from that point with only three hits over the next five innings.  TSU added another run in the fourth and crossed home four more in the sixth as the game was called via the run-rule in the sixth despite Alisa Navarro's RBI.

Samantha Arciba fell to 0-2 on the season while Tiffany Robertson led PVAMU with a 2-for-3 outing at the plate.

Sammantha Jimenez received the win for TSU in six innings, she gave up four hits, one run and struck out three.
