Jackson State 13, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 4

LONGVIEW, Texas - The Jackson State University softball team went undefeated (5-0) during the Southwestern Athletic Conference Round-up this weekend at Lear Softball Complex.

With the streak, the Lady Tigers improved to 12-22 overall and 5-0 in conference play.
As a team, Jackson State went 53-for-126, averaging .421 at the plate. JSU had a combined 56 runs scored, 52 RBI, seven home runs, and six doubles.

Freshman Denisha Knight led the Lady Tigers recording a .636 weekend batting average, including nine runs, seven hits, seven RBI, two homeruns, and a double.

Sophomore Chelsea Smith added a 7-for-14 performance, tallying 10 RBI, seven runs scored, and two homeruns.

The Lady Tigers had a combined five homeruns against Grambling State University.


Alabama State 3, Texas Southern 1

LONGVIEW, Texas - On the efforts of pitchers Melissa Christmann, Valerie Centeno, and Shantelle Smith halted a late Southern scoring threat in game one and allowed Texas Southern only one run in game two giving ASU two more wins in the SWAC Round Up.  The team ended the round-up with a 4-1 record on Sunday.

Down two heading in the bottom of the seventh inning against Southern, Meagan Dixon stole second after drawing a lead-off walk. Dixon would come around to score on a Kendall Core single to right field, who moved to second on a fielding error by Southern. Core advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jazzmine Romero, at which point Jasmine James was called on to pinch run.
 The next ASU batter Brittney Wilson, on a 0-0 count blasted the ball down the right field line for a walk-off two-run home run to seal the 9-8 victory for the Lady Hornets.

 Southern would get on the scoreboard first with two runs in their half of the first inning, but ASU answered back with three runs of their own to close out the first inning.
 
Valerie Centeno would be the first run of the ballgame for the Lady Hornets, as a Dixon double to left field would drive her in. Core followed with a double scoring Aleesa Yanez, who was hit by a pitch, and advanced Dixon to third.
 After a Romero pop up and a Wilson walk to load the bases, Raven Walker would get hit by a pitch that forced in Dixon for the third score of the day.
 
ASU would plate three more runs in the bottom of the fifth, when Tacresha Favors, who came into pinch run for Yanez, reached base after getting hit by a pitch, came in to score on another double by Dixon down the left field line.
Dixon would later score, when the Southern Left fielder dropped a fly ball hit by Wilson. Wilson would later come home after Walker, who singled to third base, advancing to second on a throwing error, and got caught in a rundown at second base.
 
Game two saw Texas Southern getting on the board first with a 1-0 lead over the Lady Hornets.  Meagan Dixon led off inning two with a double down the left field line.  On a ground ball to the third baseman by Diauna Nelson, Dixon advanced to third eventually scoring on a passed ball to even the score at one.
 
In the bottom of third ASU picked up two more runs that were credited to Dixon who hit a triple to right field to give Alabama State the 3-1 win.


Arkansas-Pine Bluff 7, Alabama A&M 1
Southern 9, Alabama A&M 0
LONGVIEW, Texas – Alabama A&M University took a double loss on the final day of the SWAC Roundup at Lear Athletic Complex.

In game one, AAMU (9-17, 1-3) went head-to-head against Arkansas-Pine Bluff (5-21, 2-22) they were defeated 7-1.

The Lady Lions were able to pull out 10 hits versus the Lady Bulldogs two.  Kendra Linn and Lacie Sutterfield recorded two RBI apiece for UAPB.

Anisa Britt (3-8) picked up the loss for AAMU giving up four hits and four runs in two innings while Sutterfield (5-10) was tabbed the win for UAPB , she pitched in seven innings while striking out two and giving up one run.

In game two, Southern University received its first win on the season, picking up a win against Alabama A&M.

The Lady Jaguars (1-22, 1-4)shutout the Lady Bulldogs (9-18, 1-4) 9-0, Southern recorded eight RBI, nine runs and 10 hits.

Sarah Miller (1-0) recorded the win in five innings while giving up four runs. AAMU was unable to get on the board and Cassandra Brown (3-5) took the loss pitching in 3.1 innings, she gave up 10 hits and nine runs.

Jackson State 13, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 4
LONGVIEW, Texas - In their final game of the 2014 Southwestern Athletic Conference Softball Roundup, the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff Softball team dropped a 13-4 decision to Jackson State, on Sunday afternoon at Lear Athletic Complex.
 
UAPB (5-22, 2-3  SWAC) recorded six hits in the contest with Kelsey Ridgeway going two-for-three from the plate to lead the Lady Lions, while JSU (12-22, 5-0 SWAC) tallied a game high 11 hits with Lyndsey Colvin going three-for-three from the plate, scoring two runs and driving in two runs.
 
Breea Jamerson (5-8) got the win for the Lady Tigers as she pitched three and two-thirds scoreless innings, allowing one hits and striking out two, whereas Sybill Lozano, the JSU starter went one and one-third innings, allowing five hits, four earned runs and striking out one in the 12 batters she faced.
 
Alexsis McCain (0-7) received the loss for the Lady Lions as she pitched four innings, allowing 11 hits, 11 earned runs and striking out two in the 30 batters she faced.
 
Ridgeway gave the Lady Lions a 2-0 lead in the top of the first with a double to left field scoring both Paige Garcia and Emilee Gywn.
 
JSU would respond in the bottom of the first inning as they turned seven hits, and two UAPB errors in 10 runs to take a 10-2 lead.
 
UAPB would two more runs in the top of the second inning as McCain scored on a Gywn single, followed by a Tiressa Jacobs' sacrifice fly to center field scoring Rolanda Murry, cutting the Lady Tigers' lead to 10-4.
 
The Lady Tigers would plate three more runs in the bottom of the second inning for the 13-4 win invoking the eight-run mercy rule.


Alcorn 10, Prairie View 9
Grambling State 10, Alcorn 4
LONGVIEW, Texas - On the final day of the SWAC Round-Up, the Lady Braves kicked off the day with an amazing comeback win over Prairie View.

The Lady Braves fell behind 6-0 in the first inning on a few base hits and a three-run homerun by the Lady Panthers.

But Alexandria Harris went to work for the Lady Braves again hitting a four-run grand slam for her second homerun of the SWAC Round-Up to tie the game at 6-6.

The Lady Braves struck again in the third, fourth, and fifth inning to extend their lead to 10-6. The Lady Panthers scored three runs in the final inning but hit into a ground ball for the third out.

In the final game of the Roundup the Lady Braves faced Grambling State.

GSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked backed from there.

The Lady Braves cut into the lead 4-2 in the bottom of the third inning but the Lady Tigers maintained their composure and continued to score runs in three of the next four innings.

Harris finished the weekend with a team-high 13 RBIs on five hits and batted .417. She also scored five runs and hit two homeruns to lead the Lady Braves.
