Prairie View 10, Alabama A&M 7
LONGVIEW, Texas – Prairie View A&M improved to a 5-9 overall record and picked up its first conference win of the season by beating Alabama A&M 10-7 on the opening day of the Southwestern Athletic Conference roundup at the Lear Athletic Complex.
Monica Cartwright (2-3) pitched five innings to pick up the win. She gave up four runs on six hits and struck one batter out.
Alisa Navarro led PVAMU’s (5-,9 1-0) offense as she went 3-4 at the plate with four RBI.
Meaghan Gray (1-6) took the loss for the Lady Bulldogs(8-18, 0-1) giving up eight hits while striking out three.
Mississippi Valley State 8, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 3
LONGVIEW, Texas- Mississippi Valley State University dominated its first day in the 2014 SWAC Round-Up at the Lear Athletic Complex. MVSU defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff 8-3, the Devilettes advance to 3-22 on the season.
MVSU (3-22, 1-0) racked up seven RBI, two coming from Jahcenda Garrett. Tenna Patterson picked up the win inside the circle pitching three complete innings while striking out three UAPB batters.
The Lady Lions (3-20, 0-1) collected seven hits led by Texas native Paige Garcia who went two-for- three at the plate. Kendra Linn and Jasmine Hardwick each went one for three at the plate. Lacie Sutterfield (3-10) suffered the loss for UAPB, she struck out five players while giving up 12 hits and eight runs.
Alcorn State 6, Southern 5
LONGVIEW, Texas - During the first day of the 2014 Softball SWAC round-up the Lady Braves of Alcorn State University defeated the Lady Jaguars 6-5 in a hard fought seventh inning rally.
Alcorn State (3-12, 1-0) got on the board first with two RBI from a single by Alexandria Harris. From there Adriana Gutierrez and Jessie Gresley each scored a run.
Southern (0-18, 0-1) came out in the third inning scoring their first run of the game. Carla Arismendi led the Lady Jaguars with three hits followed by Sydney Wesley with two.
The Lady Braves just wouldn’t go away scoring their final two runs in the bottom of the seventh to close out the inning and the game.
Paxton Cathcart pushed Alcorn to a win in four innings while giving up six hits and three runs.
Kayliegh Thomas was handed the loss, she pitched in 6.1 innings while allowing nine hits and six runs while striking out three.
Grambling State 10, Alabama State 3
Grambling State University picked up a 10-3 win against Alabama State University on Friday, during the opening day of 2014 SWAC Roundup at the Lear Athletic Complex in Longview Texas.
Grambling (4-7, 1-0) would plate one run in their half of the first inning for a 2-1 score. Both clubs would strand runners in innings 2-4, but managed to get on the board on the fifth inning.
The Lady Hornets (5-15, 3-2) got out to an early 2-0 lead, when Valerie Centeno, who reached a lead-off double to centerfield, would come around to score off Tamara Williams single through the right side. Williams, after advancing to third on a passed ball, would come in for the Lady Hornets second run on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Aleesa Yanez.
In the top of the fifth, Centeno led off with a walk and would advance to second on a single by Yanez, after Williams popped up to the third baseman. Meagan Dixon, in her next plate appearance, would single to centerfield to load the bases. Nelson followed with a fielder's choice that scored Centeno from third for a 3-1 ASU advantage.
Guarding a narrow 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the sixth, accompanied by five Grambling State hits and three Alabama State errors, GSU plated eight runs to take a 10-3 advantage that would hold to give the game its final.
Senior pitcher Angela Perez (3-4) gained the win for the Lady Tigers in seven innings, she struck out three Lady Hornets will giving up nine hits and three runs.
Melissa Christmann(3-7) was tabbed the loss for ASU, in 5.1 innings she struck out two while giving up nine runs and seven hits.
Jackson State 7, Texas Southern 2
LONGVIEW, Texas – Jackson State University defeated Texas Southern 7-2 in the opening day of the annual SWAC Softball Roundup on Friday afternoon.
JSU improved to (8-22, 1-0) overall as Texas Southern gained a loss (6-12, 0-1). The Lady Tigers took an early lead, scoring seven runs by the third inning. Texas Southern was only able to get on the board with two runs, one in the third inning and their last run in the sixth inning.
Canessa Swanson and Lauren Aikens helped the JSU Lady Tigers cut the TSU Lady Tigers scoring each by smacking two RBI single up the heart of TSU’s defense.
Samantha Jilmenez (2-2) took the loss for TSU she gave up three hits and three run in 4.2 innings. Breea Jamerson (3-8) from JSU was tabbed the win in six innings as she only gave up five hits and striking out six.
