HOUSTON, Texas —Jackson State University forced 31 turnovers and topped Mississippi Valley State 74-68 Thursday morning in quarter-final action of the 2014 Toyota SWAC Basketball Tournament at the Toyota Center. 

MVSU (9-21) gets eliminated in just one game after appearing in last season’s SWAC Tournament Championship game held at the Toyota Center.

Dominique Brothern led the Lady Tigers (15-14) with 16 points.  Ayanna Hardy-Fuller scored 13 points and pulled down eight rebounds.  Alisa Ross and Ayanna Lynn added 11 and 10 points respectively.

Joncyee Sanders poured in 12 of her 21 points in the first half for the Devilettes while Ashley Beasley added 13 points with both Olivia Kennedy and Jasmyne Sanders scoring 12 points apiece.  Kennedy was 4-of-4 from three point range.

Despite committing 17 turnovers in the first half, the Devilettes still led by as many as seven points and held on to a one point  lead 37-36 at halftime. 

The game was tied at 40 with 15:54 left to play in the second half when JSU went on a 7-0 run sparked by baskets from Ke’ra St. John , Bridget Robinson, and Brothern. The Lady Tigers created their biggest lead of the game at the 12:12 mark bringing the score to 52-41.

MVSU chipped away at their deficit and would come within two points with 2:40 left to play but were outscored 9-7 by JSU in the final minutes.
