HOUSTON – In a rematch of last season’s SWAC Tournament Championship game, Prairie View A&M University upset top-seeded Southern 64-46 Wednesday night at the Toyota Center.
Tre Hagood scored 16 points to lead PVAMU out of the quarterfinals for the second straight season.
The Panthers (10-22) avenged two losses to the Jaguars (19-13) this year, the last a 91-59 rout on March 6. Prairie View will now play the winner of Thursday night's game between Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Alabama A&M.
Up nine at the break, PVAMU opened the second half on a 14-2 run and led 39-18 with 13:25 remaining. Southern would only get within 12 points, 50-38 with 3:31 to play.
Jules Montgomery added 12 points for the Panthers, which has won twice since snapping a seven-game losing skid.
Malcolm Miller scored 16 points and Calvin Godfrey added 12 for Southern, who shot just 21 of 59 from the field (35.6 percent) while producing its lowest point total in a half scoring 16 points at the break.
