Alabama A&M 64, Alcorn State 62
HOUSTON, Texas - Brittney Strickland made a jumper with 18 seconds left to lift No. 9 Alabama A&M University to a 64-62 victory over No. 8 Alcorn State on Tuesday evening during the 2014 Toyota SWAC Basketball Tournament at Toyota Center.
AAMU trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half before going into the locker room down by eight. A shot by Strickland at the 2:13 minute mark gave the Lady Bulldogs their first lead of the second half, 59-57.
ALCN's leading scorer, Tierro Frost, made two shots from the line to tie the game at 59. With 1:25 remaining, the two would exchange baskets until Strickland's jumper gave the Lady Bulldogs a one point lead. Strickland added a free throw in the final seconds of the game to put the Lady Bulldogs up by two. With a chance to tie the game, Frost took a shot in the paint but came up short.
Strickland tallied 28 points with six rebounds, six steals and three assists to help carry AAMU to the quarterfinals. That Lady Bulldogs will meet No. 1 seed Southern on Wednesday, March 12 at 5:30 p.m. CT.
Jasmine Sanders also finished in double figures with 12 points and a team high nine rebounds to complement three assists and two steals for Lady Bulldogs.
ALCN's Frost scored 21 points, shooting a perfect 6-of-6 from the line. Ashtin McNichols posted 13 points and Kierro Frost chipped in 10 to lead the Lady Braves.
AAMU shot 38 percent from the floor and 66 percent from the line while ALCN shot 35 percent from the field and 69 percent from the charity stripe.
