Toyota SWAC Championship
CONFERENCE NEWS AND NOTES
• The 2014 SWAC Basketball Tournament will be held at the Toyota Center from March 11-15. The Southwestern Athletic Conference will host the 2014 Championship for the first time in Houston, Texas
• What happens if an ineligible team wins the championship game of the tournament? The eligible team that advances furthest in the conference tournament will receive the automatic berth to the NCAA championships. In the event of a tie (for example, all tournament-eligible teams are eliminated in the same round), the automatic berths will go to the highest-seeded team
• On March 9, the league voted Kendra Coleman (SUBR) as this week’s SWAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week
• Six student athletes within the conference completed the regular season averaging over 15 points per game. The list includes: Jazzmin Parker (TXSO) with 19.2, Jeanette Jackson (PVAM) with 19.2, Joanna Miller (GRAM) with 18.4, Tierro Frost (ALCN) averaging 18.0, Kendra Coleman (SUBR) with 18.0, and Brittney Strickland (AAMU) registered 16.8 ppg
• Jackson State currently holds a league best seven tournament championships while Grambling State is next in line with six
• Joanna Miller (GRAM) and Quentori Alford (ALST) earned a spot on the SWAC All-Conference teams for the second consecutive year
• Under the leadership of Head Coach Sandy Pugh, Southern won the 2013-14 regular season title for the third time in the last five years
• Individual leaders in the conference in points, assists and rebounds:
Points - Jazzmin Parker (TXSO) - 19.2 / game
Assists - Joncyee Sanders (MVSU) - 5.8 / game
Rebounds - Morgan Simmons (TXSO) - 8.4 / game
• Jazzmin Parker finished her first year as a TSU Lady Tiger averaging 19.2 points per game as she led the league in scoring all season
• Eight student-athletes scored 20 ore more points in a game during last week’s competition (Tierro Frost, Jazzmin Parker, Nakiya Smith, Jeanette Jackson, Kendra Coleman, Brittney Strickland, Jasmine Jefferson and Christina Lasane)
• Team leaders in the conference in points, assists and rebounds:
Points - Southern - 73.6 / game
Assists - Texas Southern - 14.6 / game
Rebounds (Offense) - Alabama State - 17.5 / game
Rebounds (Defense) - Alabama State - 29.4 / game
• Prairie View A&M’s Alexus Parker picked up her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds when the Lady Panthers faced Grambling State on Thursday
