CONFERENCE NEWS AND NOTES

The 2014 SWAC Basketball Tournament will be held at the Toyota Center from March 11-15. The Southwestern Athletic Conference will host the 2014 Championship for the first time in Houston, Texas

• What happens if an ineligible team wins the championship game of the tournament? The eligible team that advances furthest in the conference tournament will receive the automatic berth to the NCAA championships. In the event of a tie (for example, all tournament-eligible teams are eliminated in the same round), the automatic berths will go to the highest-seeded team

• On this date: March 11, 1996: Mississippi Valley State’s Marcus Mann (28 Rebounds) set a single-game rebounding record against rival Jackson State

• Alabama State and Texas Southern finished the regular season tied for second place. TSU won the head-to-head tiebreaker. (Feb 3 ASU 79 TSU 73) (Mar 1 TSU 86 ASU 66)

• Top leaders in the conference in points, assists and rebounds:
Points - Aaric Murray(TXSO) - 22.0 /game
Assists - Jamel Waters (ALST) 6.2/game

•A rematch of last season’s championship game (Prairie View & Southern) could come as early as the second round. Southern has a bye and PVAMU faces MVSU in the first round

• Texas Southern’s Aaric Murray scores 48 (20-of-28) at Temple.No player in college basketball 6-10 or taller in college basketball has scored this many points in a decade and Murray is the first player since BYU’s Jimmer Fredette in 2011 to knock down 20 field goals. The center is also ranked seventh in the nation in scoring (22.3)

• Streaks: Texas Southern enters the tournament having won six in a row. Prairie View is on a seven game losing streak

• Wichita State completed its season at a perfect 34-0. The last team to accomplish that feat was UNLV (1991). The last SWAC team to do so was Alcorn State 1979
