HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Alcorn State University earned its first Southwestern Athletic Conference division championship Saturday after defeating Alabama A&M University 41-14 in Louis Crews Stadium. The win punched the Braves’ ticket to Houston and to the 2014 Toyota SWAC Football Championship on December 6 at NRG Stadium.
Alcorn improved to 8-2 (6-1 SWAC), while the Bulldogs moved to 4-6 (3-4 SWAC) with the loss.
Quarterback John Gibbs Jr (Alcorn State) finished with a game-high 232 total yards of offense that included three touchdowns, two rushing, and no interceptions. He earned a game-high 155 rushing yards with his longest being a 58-yard touchdown that opened scoring just over 90 seconds into the game.
Desmond Stevenson (Alcorn State) had a breakout game as well. He earned a game-high 13 tackles, eight solo, with two sacks for a loss of 16 yards.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Alabama State University survived a slow start to defeat Jackson State University 26-10 Saturday in the New ASU Stadium. The Hornets (5-5, 4-4 SWAC) put up 23 second half points to earn the win. Jackson State dropped to 3-7 overall, 1-6 in SWAC play with the loss.
The win was a team effort for ASU whose two quarterbacks, Daniel Duhart and Quinteris Toppings, finished with 124 and 127 passing yards, respectively. LaMontiez Ivy (Jackson State) threw for a game-high 212 yards. He connected on 17-of-29 passes and earned one touchdown.
The Tigers’ Ariane McCree and Javancy Jones tied for the game-high of 10 tackles. Both finished with six solo, but McCree earned two for a loss and forced a fumble.

PINE BLUFF, Ark. – A huge third quarter push propelled Prairie View A&M University to its 51-23 rout of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Saturday in Golden Lion Stadium. The Panthers (4-5, 4-4 SWAC) scored 27 second half points while holding Pine Bluff (3-6, 2-5 SWAC) to just 13.
Jerry Lovelocke (Prairie View) finished with a game-high 355 yards and four touchdowns after completing 23-of-36 passes. He also ran for 49 yards and fifth touchdown. Both Johntá Hebert and Arthur Lockett of Prairie View ran for over a 100 yards. Hebert earned a game-high 122 yards with a touchdown, and Lockett went for 114 yards, respectively.
Four finished with 11 tackles on the day. For PVAMU, Jerome Howard and Danny Brownell, and for Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Jared Turner and Kyle Walker. Brownell had a game-high 2.5 sacks for a loss of 22 yards. Turner grabbed a game-high nine solo tackles.

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Southern University defense stepped up and shut Texas Southern University down in the second half to help the team to a 30-20 win at home Saturday in A.W. Mumford Stadium. Southern (7-3) improved to 6-1 in conference play, while TSU dropped to 5-5 overall, 3-5 in conference.
Austin Howard (Southern) passed for a game-high 177 yards. And Lenard Tillery (Southern) earned a game-high 125 yards on the ground.
Defensively, Darian Claiborne (Texas Southern) picked up a game-high 10 tackles, four solo, with one for a loss of six yards. Southern’s Dionte McDuffy finished right behind him with nine tackles of his own, four solo.
