BATON ROUGE, La. – The Hornets of Alabama State swept the Tigers of Jackson State, 3-0, Sunday afternoon in the Cliford Seymour Gymnasium. This match win moves the Hornets ahead as they prep to play in the championship game. The scores include: 25-11, 25-16, 25-14.

The first set began a back and forth battle between defending SWAC champions, Alabama State and Jackson State. The Hornets pulled forward with a five point lead an continued to march forward. A rattled JSU allowed the score to climb as they issued errors. Under Setter of the Year, Ellyn Jones, the Hornets gained an 11 point lead, broken by a service error. Alabama State took the first set, 25-11.

The second set started much like the first. With Player of the Year, Myla Marshall, serving, ASU climbed to a five-point lead over JSU. But with fight, the Tigers worked their way back in, forcing a Hornets timeout. Still rattled by errors, the Tigers gave the ball back to Alabama State as ASU closed the set, 25-16. The Hornets out blocked the Tigers 3 to 1 and held JSU at a .118 hitting percentage.

Jones ignited a 3-0 run before an attack error passed the ball to JSU. The match went on in favor of the Hornets as they finished the set, 25-14. The results of this match move ASU to the championship match and eliminate JSU from the tournament.

The championship match will begin at 5 p.m. in the Cliford Seymour Gymnasium and will be broadcast on the SWAC Digital Network.
