BATON ROUGE, La. - Alabama State University wrapped up the final match of the night by bumping off in-state rivalry Alabama A&M, 3-0 Saturday night at the Horace Moody Complex. Set scores include: 25-20, 26-24 and 25-15.

Rachel Smith registered 12 kills and eight digs for the Hornets.  Brooke Beasley recorded 23 assists and Jamie Coleman tallied 11 digs. Myla Marshall recorded the best hitting percentage overall, .615. Alexandria Green led the way for Alabama A&M with a .500 hitting percentage.

Alabama A&M started the match off scoring the first point.  ASU and AAMU rallied back and forth with points.  Alabama State took the first two point, 12-10, off a blocking error from the Bulldogs. They stretched the lead by six, 23-17 after Myla Marshall successfully pushed the ball over the net in an open area. Scout Wonsang produced a kill that would lead the Hornets to match point.  ASU connected on another kill, winning the first set 25-20.

A clear block by ASU Hornets put them up three points, 7-4 in the second set. The score was tied majority of the entire set due to both teams exchanging points.  With the score tied at 22-22, Alabama A&M called a timeout. ASU's Briana Dorsey came out with a massive kill. A soft touch from Marshall would make it set point for Alabama State. A blocking error from the Bulldogs would secure the Hornets second straight set.

ASU set the tempo for the third set, scoring the first two points.  A kill by Dorsey would pushing Alabama State's lead up by four, 14-10.  An impressive kill by the Hornet's Tiara Kelly would put them up by six, 20-14. Lorena Rasario would make it match point after a clear ball over and Alabama State would claim the third and final set of the night.

Alabama State University will hit the court to face Jackson State at 10 a.m. Sunday morning during the first round of semifinals.
