WVB Tourney: Alcorn State Fell to Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 3-0

BATON ROUGE, La. – Alcorn State fell to Arkansas-Pine Bluff Saturday afternoon in the Cliford Seymour Gymnasium to a score of 3-0. Match scores include: 25-14, 25-21, 25-19.

The first set began with both teams taking turns scoring. A quick three point run pushed the Golden Lions ahead, 5-2, but soon ended on an attack error. The battle continued as neither team allowed too much of a scoring gap until serves pushed UAPB ahead by four. The Golden Lions went on to win the set.

Repeating the start of the first set in the second match, both teams took turns putting points on the board. Arkansas-Pine Bluff gained a lead of six points, making the score 19-13, to force a Braves timeout. Entertaining rallies went on as Alcorn State crept back into the set, tying the score, 19-19. A service error broke the Braves momentum as UAPB re-gained the ball. Two kills from Whitney Harris and a Braves error ended the set, 25-21.

With each team matching the intensity of the other, UAPB left the score, 7-5, due to an Alcorn State timeout. A service ace from Danada Smith tied the set at eight, but soon the Lions took over with three scores. Mistakes haunted the Braves as they allowed UAPB to keep the lead. With a lead of seven, Arkansas-Pine Bluff gathered a score of 20-14 before giving the ball back to Alcorn. When recovered, UAPB finished the set, securing a 25-19 win.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff will play the loser of match nine, while Alcorn State is now out of the tournament.
