BATON ROUGE, La. -  No. 3 in the East, Jackson State University opened the 2014 SWAC Women's Volleyball Tournament with a 3-1 win over No. 2 in the West, Arkansas-Pine Bluff Saturday morning at the Horace Moody Complex.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff entered the tournament (10-18) (6-2 SWAC) and Jackson State, (9-19) (5-3 SWAC).

The Golden Lions and the Tigers rallied back and forth in points.  The score was tied numerous of times during the first set. After a kill from UAPB's Lauren Corby, they went up by three points (13-10).  Jackson State's Simone Ward came back with a kill, hyping up the Tigers. JSU went up four points, targeting for match point. First set ended 25-20.

Jackson State Tigers set the tempo in the second set taking a 7-0 lead, forcing many errors from Arkansas-Pine Bluff. JSU took the biggest lead in the second set by 12 points (18-6).  The Tigers claimed another straight set 25-18.

UAPB got things going in the third set, leading 4-0. The Golden Lions took their first lead 13-12.  Their largest lead in the third set was, 22-13.  They fought hard and pulled through, claiming their first set win of the morning, 25-16.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff took a 19-12 lead in the fourth set. Both teams showed much aggression but Jackson State prevailed and won the final set, 25-23.

Jordan Foyer tallied 37 assists for the Golden Lions. Jenna Siddiqui recorded 44 for JSU. Taija Thomas led the Tigers with 14 kills and 15 digs.

Jackson State University now (10-19) advances in the winner's bracket.
