BATON ROUGE, La. – The Texas Southern Tigers defeated the Alcorn State Brave, 3-0, during the first match of the 2014 SWAC Volleyball Championship Saturday morning in the Cliford Seymour Gymnasium. Set scores were 25-13, 25-16, 25-16.

Kali Fuke led the match with 12 kills, hitting at .688 percent. Sarah Wooton provided a match-high 14 assists, while Vanessa Ortega sprung for a high 12 digs. 

The match began on a kill from Texas Southern’s Kailynn Gray. After an impressive rally between the two teams, the Tigers pulled ahead of the Braves on a four-point run, making the score, 12-6. The run was broken by an attack error. Under server Ashle Markey, the Tigers regained the ball, improving their lead by 10 points. The Braves battled back on a three-point run, but proved not enough as Robyn Shannon provided a kill, ending the set, 25-13.

Samone Boyd set the tone for the second set, snapping a powerful kill. Momentum for the Tigers continued, but ended when Alcorn State broke the scoring to get within a score of 14-6. Erica Lewis thwarted the Braves response by answering with a kill. The Braves collected a four-point run for the first time in the set, cutting the deficit to 17-12, forcing a Texas Southern timeout.  Fittingly, Fluke ended the second set on a kill.

In the final set, Alcorn State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. A point from the Tigers broke the flow of the Braves’ process, but after a TSU timeout, Alcorn extends the lead, 6-1. The Tigers fought back to increase their place on the score board. A Massive Kill by Shannon ignited Texas Southern as ended the set and the match 25-16.

The Tigers will play the winner of match three at 3 p.m., while the Braves will play the losers of match two at 1 p.m.
