Alabama State wins 2014 Women's Title

CLINTON, Miss. – The Alabama State University women’s cross country team earned its fourth straight Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship Monday at Choctaw Trails.  The Hornets took the top six positions in the race with Artrailia Lesane (Fayetteville, N.C.) winning her first SWAC title.  Lesane finished in 17:49.20 with an average mile time of 5:44.2.  ASU’s average team time of 18:27.96 was over two minutes faster than the second place finisher.

Head Coach Ritchie Beene was named SWAC Coach of the Year.

Along with Lesane, the Hornets other scorers made of up the SWAC First-Team All-Conference.  Paige Rankine (McDonough, Ga.), Shantia Wilson (McDonough, Ga.), Tatiana Etienne (Lake Worth, Fla.), and Santina Williams (Hartford, Conn.) finished in positions 2-5 to garner first team honors. 

Second-Team All-SWAC included ASU’s Kimberly Wedderburn (Miami, Fla.), Mississippi Valley State University’s Deja Davis (Aurora, Ohio), Southern University’s Ebonique Diaz (Las Vegas, Nevada), Prairie View A&M’s University’s Martha Bustamante (Cameron, Texas), and Dynasty Williams (Baker, La.) from Alcorn State University.

In the team competition, Prairie View placed second with a score of 96, and Texas Southern finished third with 113 points.
